TideLog Archive for December, 2008

My pride and joy, Lucy, has finally given up the ghost on me. She was the best computer I have ever owned, and has always done what I have asked her to, loyally and lovingly. You may have read on TideLog a while back about her being a graphics card eater (as opposed to real woman man eaters!) She has been used in a variety of situations, including:

  • A DJ machine, in many clubs, bars and so on
  • A server, running 24/7 365 for nearly 2 years straight
  • My general workhorse, used for gaming, Internet, Video etc

I built her in 2002, when I met Kassie. I built it as a family machine, when we moved into our first home together. Her specs were:

  • Gigabyte GA-8S648FX P4 Titan Series Motherboard, the best ever board I have owned
  • Pentium 4 3.06GHz HT 800MHz FSB CPU
  • 256MB Corsair DDR400 RAM
  • Western Digital WD400 40GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
  • Hercules 64MB Graphics Card

I’ve kept most of the stock specs all through her life, only changing the graphics card (3 times), RAM to 3GB about 12 months ago so I could run Vista Ultimate with all the bells and whistles, and Hard drive once, to an 80GB Hitachi DeskStar.

The graphics cards she’s had are the Hercules one, an ATi Radeon 9550 256MB 8x AGP, a Radeon 9800 XT 256MB, and finally a Radeon X1650 512MB card, which she’s run with for 7 months until her demise. I’ve always liked ATi, and have sworn by them, like I now swear by Gigabyte, they make the best boards in the industry. Their literature translation is funny (Incorrect using it may cause your system broken!), their servers are slightly slow, but they are the only things wrong.

The motherboard has suffered heat stress damage over the 5 years I have been running her. I can’t believe she has lasted so long. Gigabyte products are so well made, I can understand it. Now she will not POST at all, I’ve reseated, replaced, and cleaned components, and used a barebones config, nothing worked.

I just finalised the purchase of my new processor for Lucy, an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 LGA 775 2.5GHz monster. I can overclock it to 4GHz. The E5200 was only released August this year, and uses Intel64 64 bit architecture, and Intel NetBurst, with 800MHz FSB. Now I need an Intel P35 Motherboard, and have about 4 Gigabyte ones to choose from. No other company is in the decision. The P35 is the successor to Intel’s 915 and i915p chipsets, which were awesome coupled with Prescott P4 chips, and a decent AGP graphics card.

I intend to get an ATi HD4650 Graphics card, with 1GB memory. My main reason (admittedly) is so I can run GTA4 on PC, it seems so much better than the Xbox360 version, and the PS3.

I feel I will be able to get another 2 or 3 years out of this new setup, until I can afford a Core i7 Intel setup, what a monster!

TideLog is back! After a couple of years, I’m all new, feeling OK, and running a new company, Kitamura Computers. After the tragic passing of Ryoko Kitamura, my girlfriend Kassie’s best friend of 12 years, I decided to dedicate it to her. This is where TideLog now has its home.

TL is due for an upgrade, my version of WP is way out of date, it must be at least over a year, so if things mess up, I’ll put it right. I’m going to edit my posts too, I wasn’t too sensible back then, and things need putting into perspective.
